The Dog Page

Here are a few books about dogs.

First, the obligatory Ceasar Milan

Ceasar's Way

Next, we have Turid Rugaas.  She's written what I call "the owner's manual that should have come with your dog."  They are excellent, easy to understand, and I promise you'll learn a lot about the language of dogs.  Must read.  Woof!

Here's her web page:  http://www.canis.no/rugaas/

You get almost everything for free if you read all the pages, but the books are great, too.

Calming Signals - what does a yawn mean?  Why won't they look into a camera?

Barking - The Sound of a Language - Are there really 8 different barks?

My Dog Pulls - What Do I Do - Retractable leashes teach dogs to pull.

Okay, dog training is out of the way.  Now on to a few books that are more stories about dogs.  The first, which is both a narrative story about a dog, and an excellent resource of research about how amazing dogs are.  If you get emotional about the idea of a beloved pet and best friend dying, I suggest stopping reading this otherwise excellent book at the chapter titled "White Muzzle".  The book is Merle's door by Ted Kerasote.

Merle's Door - Lessons From a Freethinking Dog

One thing I really learned in that book was about dogs eating bones.  Lucy and Rufus are glad I read that book. Their teeth are no longer covered with brown plaque anymore.

A more fun book about the dog after Merle, named Pukka.  This is a cute, picture-filled story.  I don't recommend it on a black and white Kindle, because the pictures won't look as good.

Pukka, the Pup After Merle

And finally, here my book called My Dog Rufus.  It's a book with mostly short stories about Rufus and what Sarah and I imagined he thinks about his world.

New Addition - October 2012 - Riley

Lucy died in August 2012.  She developed immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), which is very lethal.  Basically, her immune system started attacking her red blood cells and she died a few days after.  So, what was I to do, but get another dog?  It took a while searching on Petfinder, but eventually I found Riley.  She's a rough terrier mix about the same size as Lucy, but with all the energy of a puppy.  She can easily handle 12 mile hikes and still wants to chase the tennis ball after that.  And, she's very cute!

Okay, we're waiting.  When will dinner be ready?
